Huron County/Sheppard murder trial delayed

The Huron County trial has been delayed for the two men accused in the 2003 cold case murder of Perkins Township’s Michael Sheppard Junior.

Scott Hall of Clyde and Adam White of Sandusky were scheduled to go on trial next Tuesday; but a third suspect, Joshua Stamm of Florida, has filed a motion to put a halt to his extradition to Ohio.

Stamm, who’s currently serving a three-year prison term in Florida for weapons charges, claims that the state of Ohio doesn’t have sufficient evidence to prosecute him.

The state of Florida has until Tuesday to take action on Stamm’s motion.

 

Clyde/Casualty in mobile home fire

A Tuesday morning fire at a mobile home in Clyde claimed one life.

The blaze took place in the 1700 block of West McPherson Highway.

The identity of the victim and the cause of the fire are under investigation.

 

Perkins Township/Employee suspended

A Perkins Township employee was recently suspended for 10 days without pay.

The punishment for 12-year employee Troy Nemitz was due to him skipping a mandatory meeting and being insubordinate during a follow-up interview.

Other factors were considered in Nemitz’s suspension including a previous two-day suspension in 2016 for lying about why he needed time off work.

 

Erie County/Portion of SR 61 closed

In Erie County, State Route 61 between routes 2 and 6 will remain closed today for a culvert installation.

It’s expected to re-open on Friday.

 

Huron County/Operations Center named in honor of Ommert

The Huron County Emergency Management Agency has named their operations center after a long-time EMA Director.

A dedication ceremony was held last week for The Bill Ommert Huron County Emergency Operations Center.

Ommert served as EMA Director from 1991 to 2009 and spent some time as interim director last year following the resignation of Jason Roblin.

Ommert passed away in August of last year at the age of 77.

 

Fremont/Drug raid

A 45 year-old Fremont woman faces a felony drug charge following a raid Wednesday by local drug task forces.

Cherika Magee has been charged with cocaine possession and could face additional charges.

Authorities also found a handgun and close to $8,000 in cash at the Webster Street home.

 

Ottawa County/Identity theft

A 51 year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison for multiple counts of identity fraud.

Oreste Torres was indicted last June in Ottawa County after authorities found him with dozens of fake credit cards containing stolen information.

 

Norwalk/Levy for aquatic facility

City Council in Norwalk has approved a replacement levy for maintenance and operations of the Ernsthausen Community Center’s aquatic facility.

The .65-mill levy will be placed on the May 8th ballot.

If voted in, it would cost a homeowner 78 cents for a house valued at $100,000.

 

Norwalk/Police Chief Selection Committee meeting

The City of Norwalk Police Chief Selection Committee will meet tonight at 6:30 pm in the conference room at Norwalk City Hall.

Current Police Chief Dave Light is set to retire February 16th after 33 years with the department.
