Patrol focused on impaired drivers this Labor Day weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be out in full force this Labor Day Weekend with a focus on removing impaired drivers from the road.

The patrol says there were 15 fatal crash deaths during last year’s holiday weekend with four of those being OVI-related.

Overall, 749 OVI arrests were made during Labor Day weekend 2016.


Details released in Huron County Jail inmate altercation investigation

An Erie County Prosecutor has released information from his investigation of an inmate altercation in July, in which a Huron County Deputy Sheriff later resigned.

No charges were filed against former Deputy Roberto Lombardo in the incident that left an inmate injured.

According to the Prosecutor’s report, Lombardo helped break up a fight between two inmates and later grabbed an inmate by the neck and forced him against the wall after possibly being threatened.

The report says, that Lombardo’s actions may have been questionable and against department policy, but there was insufficient basis to institute a criminal action.


New London woman pleads guilty to burglary

A 42 year-old New London woman has pled guilty to burglary from her next-door neighbor.

After reportedly having money stolen, the neighbor of Kimberly Messersmith installed a hidden camera that showed footage of her inside his home two days later.

She’ll be sentenced in October.


No criminal charges in Ohio State Fair accident

No criminal charges will be filed in the July fatal ride accident at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.

A Franklin County Prosecutor said there was not enough evidence to proceed with a criminal case.

An 18 year-old Columbus man was killed and seven others were hurt when the Fireball ride broke apart on July 26th.


‘Patriot Tour’ to roll through Sandusky on Saturday

The eighth annual Patriot Tour will make a stop in Sandusky on this weekend.

The 100-day, 14,000-mile journey features motorcycle riders carrying one American flag throughout the country to raise money for wounded veterans and their families.

The tour will arrive at Mad River Harley-Davidson on Saturday at 1:00 pm.


Lakefront improvements could be coming to Port Clinton

A $5.6 million lakefront enhancement project could be on its way to Port Clinton.

The first phase of the project has been approved; which includes a steel break wall along the Jefferson Street Pier that will be constructed in July of 2018.

Funding has yet to be confirmed on future phases; with an eventual goal of an improved pavilion, 50 boat slips, a new parking lot and a waterside walking trail.


Labor Day weekend festivals taking place in the area

The 59th annual Melon Festival gets underway Saturday in Milan’s village square.

The 3-day festival includes the queen’s contest on Saturday, grand parade on Sunday and the ‘Sport-a-Thon’ on Monday.

New London will also play host to a Labor Day Festival this weekend.

The festival in New London runs today through Monday at Recreation Park.
